Our Investment In Mozaik

Sometimes we come across a company that we know is going to change the world. They’ve got something magic in the tank that’s simply inevitable. It’s like they’re travelling back in time and building something that that in the future will be considered obvious. That’s Mozaik.

Brad will join the board with this Series B financing and we couldn’t be more excited to work alongside Mara and James as they reshape the financial ecosystem. Mozaik  fits squarely into our Glue theme as they are building technology that scrapes and vets the entire digital world of finance and stitches the pieces back together in a more rational way. Just as Twitter has reshaped social movements, Mozaik will transform our ongoing battle against corruption and fraud.  Who knows, maybe one day it can automatically produce financial reports so that we don’t need to use accountants or auditors anymore.

    Until recently I was marketing director at an established Software as a Service company. One number you need to estimate is Average Revenue Per User (ARPU, pronounced ‘are poo’). We sold monthly subs so we could easily determine this number (features purchased x price per feature). We also tracked our cost to deliver the service by user. This should drop as you scale but there will be points where infrastructure costs have to jump to accomodate more users so you’ll have the occasional downward blip until users catch up to capacity (you usually can’t scale in a linear fashion).
    Next I’d look at how you’re going to build your user base, what it costs to acquire a user, estimate life of a user and then annualize all the numbers to create projections.
    If you plan to monetize with ads, you need to do a similar calculation based on pageviews- be prepared to be discouraged if this is your model- contextual advertising does not work on service sites, IMHO (and based on experience).

    Back in India, we say “(others’) profit is the price paid for (your) ignorance”. Given the finance and allied industries were once support functions of real work, I hope this venture casts sunlight on the parasitic profession, and lets people know what they are losing.
